Mozambique Cities; Safari Holidays by Mozambique Odyssey

Located on the gateways out to the islands, Maputo, Pemba and Vilanculos are the three cities that travellers frequent most often in Mozambique. Other cities such as Beira, Inhambane and Nampula in reality have little to offer and for the vast majority of travcellers, are better left that way.

Set on a cliff overlooking Maputo Bay, Lourenco Marques, or Maputo as it is known today is the capital of Mozambique. With a chequered past of colonnial rule and many war stricken years Maputo is today a fascinating upbeat African City; the troubled years seem fogotten.

Clashing modern and old colonnial architecture dominate the centre of the city, providing ampple opportunity for travellers to sit out in one of the many roadside cafes contemplating this vibrant cities past. Streets are lined with jacaranda and flame trees seperated by stalls overflowing with fresh fruit and locals chatting on street corners. It certainly is one of Africas most intriguoing cities but only fully understood by the most intrepid of us; it is still a place to keep your wits about you when going out to appreciate what can be fantastic night life.

Mozamiques other two cities are Vilanculos and Pemba. Vilanculos, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelagos stunning beaches is located 700km North of Mozambique where as Pemba is situtaed in the North of the country, again on the coast. Both cities are typical examples of bustling African life with a couple of good hotels located in each. Pemba is the more attractive of the two, with a great city centre and fairly good beaches but Vilanculos is surrounded by great hiking areas and 30, 000 hectares of National Park.

There is no doubt in our mind though that these two cities are more stop off points than they are places of serious interest; for those of us wishing to experience what can be very hot and dusty street life then a few days in either would guarentee really authentic cultural experiences but for the rest of us, stay for the night, and move on!
